News from the Board
Lee Elliott Carnes, Retired President – Board of Trustees, Piedmont UU Church
The last couple of months have been a busy time for the Board with the Annual Leadership Retreat, Town Hall Meeting, and regular monthly meetings. I would to thank all Board members (Anne Laukaitis, Frank Mabrey, Ilene McFarland, Krissa Palmer, Jim Price, and Teresa Rowell) for their dedication to our beloved community.
The Board sponsored an Annual Leadership Retreat on April 1st with the purpose of achieving three goals. First, ministers and lay leaders recognized the talent and the wisdom within our gatherings. Second, leadership was educated about church finances. Third, leaders practiced their presentation skills in a loving environment. The Leadership Retreat successfully accomplished all three objectives.
On May 2nd, the Board met to discuss the topics for the Town Hall Meeting. On May 7th, the Board recommendations were presented to the congregation. Approximately 80 members attended the ninety-minute meeting with a dialogue between the congregants, board members, and lay leaders. It was a meeting filled with tough questions and honest answers. On May 20th, an announcement was sent to the congregation stating that the Board was reversing its decision to terminate Reverend Leland Bond-Upson’s ministry on July 1, 2017 because a few congregants gifted the congregation a combined total of $40,000. This will extend Reverend Leland’s ministry until December 31, 2017.
I am very appreciative of the Finance Committee for their work in studying the issues, communicating them, and helping the board seek solutions.
The ministerial search committee (Beth Foreman, Lou Gardiner-Parks, Meredith Norman, Christine Robinson, Becky Schisler, Resa Treadaway, and Steve Whitfield) met on May 30th to begin the process of selecting a minister to start on January 1, 2018.
It is my belief that the remainder of 2017 will be filled with opportunities for our board members, ministers, and lay leaders to create, modify, and improve the church policies. It is my hope that all of us will reach out to one another to promote our mission which is nurturing the spirit, cherishing diversity, and cultivating justice.
