Music Notes

Hello, Piedmont UUs! It’s finally July and I’m thrilled to officially be on board! My first month as your music director will be dedicated to not only providing music for Sunday services, but to listening to your thoughts about what musical offerings would bring you a more reflective and meaningful musical experience. Music means so many different things to so many people and can range from poetic to soul-shaping to exhilarating to everything in between. Please feel free to open a dialogue with me on ideas you may have regarding musical selections you’d like to have included in future services. And also – if you or someone you know has a musical talent (hidden or otherwise!), I’d love to hear about it! I promise I won’t tell them who told me.

InCHOIRing MINDS
Because our theme for the month is laughter, I thought I’d share some light-hearted music anecdotes about myself. How would YOU answer these questions?

My favorite hymn:
‘When We Are Singing’ (If you’re unfamiliar with this lovely song of Mexican origin, you’ll be sure to hear it in future services.)

Other musical talents:
I can yodel. Seriously. And since our theme this month is laughter, I just might throw a yodel at you on a random Sunday.

Favorite sing-along-in-the-car* songs:
‘Living on a Prayer’ by Bon Jovi and ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ by Olivia Newton John. *If you sing in the shower, you run the risk of getting soap in your mouth and then it becomes a soap opera.

Best concert I’ve ever attended:
1st place: Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle ‘Spirituals in Concert.’ 2nd place: Garth Brooks.

NOTEWORTHY
