From your Minister of Education and Outreach

Greetings Friends,

What’s happening in CYRE, Adult RE and Social Justice?

I am happy to report that our RE Coordinator position has been posted and is receiving responses!  We trust this will be a successful search and we will have more to report to you soon.

My thanks to MJ Lieberman, Larry Lieberman, Karl Hesse and Heidi Magi for leading the CYRE special sessions again this spring.  The connection between our children and congregation is an important one, and your leadership and attention are much appreciated.

In that same vein, I extend my thanks to Michelle Murphy, Connie Byrne, and Elaine Deck for each leading a session for our youth.  Thank you for helping our youth understand some of the ministry in this congregation. We are still looking for people who would like to bring a one-time program to our youth on Sunday morning. Feel free to contact me with your ideas

Kudos to the ADORE (A Dialogue on Race and Ethnicity) Team for an excellent program on April 8th.  Our thanks go out to our speaker Dr. Silas and the entire team for creating such a wonderful opportunity to learn.  Our commitment to Black Lives Matter is reinvigorated.

In keeping with that, ADORE is offering a series in May/June entitled “Race, the Power of an Illusion”.  This series uses science and history to illustrate the social construction of race and the way we have used laws to perpetuate harm.  We will watch it in three parts over several weeks, each part followed by a facilitated conversation. Stay tuned for locations and dates.

By the time you read this, I will have completed the RE Renaissance Module on Anti-racism, Anti-Oppression and Multiculturalism.  I hope I might be able to share some of what I learn with you in an upcoming sermon or training.

Likewise I will say thank you for your contributions of school supplies to the Feature Sunday “Partners in Education” program.   Thanks also to Elaine Deck for leading this Sunday program and this effort on behalf of our congregation.

Our Adult RE program “Cakes for the Queen of Heaven” is fantastic. It is still revolutionary to imagine a world where the Goddess is in charge!  We are bonding over our experiences as women, honoring the unique and powerful ways women contribute to the world, and reflecting on what it means to live in a world where women are still undervalued.  We come away stronger and more connected.

As you can see, I am keeping busy and frankly enjoying every minute of it.  Thank you Piedmont UU Church for being such a great congregation in which to minister!

Peace to you this day,
Rev. Amy
