From Your Lead Minister

Dear Folks,

Welcome to the month of April. Our theme for this month is Emergence! This seems fitting as we witness the miracle of spring and the beauty of nature as it comes into being.

The month of April is rich with opportunities to nurture the spirit at Piedmont. The first Sunday of April is Easter Day and our Annual Flower Communion Service. Bring a flower or flowers to share for our ritual if you like, and plan to enjoy watching our children hunt for Easter eggs following the service.

The second Sunday focuses on social justice at both locations as ADORE hosts Dr. Damon Silas at the University Gathering and Bill Crowley introduces Forward Together: The UU Justice Ministry of NC (the recipient of our plate sharing this month) at the Salisbury Gathering.

On that same Sunday, Rev. Amy will be at our Southeast UU Ministers’ Association meeting gathering valuable information from colleagues, and I will be attending Completing the Dream: Revolutionary Love conference celebrating the work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Some of the conference speakers include Ruby Sales, Rev. Traci Blackmon, Valarie Kaur, Sister Simone Campbell, Rev. Jacqui Lewis, Rev. Brian McLaren, Parker Palmer, Dr. William Barber, and many more. The message of the conference is this: “As we seek to work against racism, poverty, and militarism, we need Beloved Community and practical tools to create a more perfect union. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” We will return revived and renewed in spirit and resolve.

The third Sunday of April marks the 30th Anniversary of Piedmont Unitarian Universalist Church! We will celebrate the dream of our founding members and focus on a shared vision as we move into the future. Bring a dish to share for a special potluck to follow this combined service.

The fourth Sunday of the month is Earth Day! Rev. Amy will reflect on how we can deepen our connection to the Earth in a reflection titled: “Creation Care – My Spiritual Journey.”

Finally, our Feature Focus Sunday on April 29 will highlight the ministry of Partners in Education. Immediately following the regular service, you’ll have a chance to help out with a service project providing needed supplies for JM Alexander Middle School. Oh, and there’s something new about the month of April. Pancakes! Come for a mid-week treat on April 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the University Gathering. Have a favorite pancake topping? Bring some to share!

May you soak up the beauty of spring and be filled with hope.
Peace to you,

Rev. Mary Frances
