A Letter from Your Music Director — January 2019

A Letter from Your Music Director

The new calendar year has just begun and the Music Program at Piedmont Unitarian Universalist Church is already hard at work preparing for the experiences that lay ahead. By now you have heard the choir kick off the year with a new song,  Avril Lavigne’s inspiring ballad Keep Holding On, as it was performed on the hit television show Glee. We are ready for Hollywood!

Additionally my work as a teacher, performer, and researcher continues apace. The American Record Guide said of my recently released album of art songs by Black composers, The Reaction,  “This is a special album that brings deserved attention to these fine composers. If you enjoy art song, this is not something to miss.” An article I wrote entitled “Make the Door Open: Groundbreaking African American Teachers of Singing,” was also recently published in the Voice and Speech Review.

I have also begun rehearsals for Carmen with Opera Carolina. Those performances take place January 19, 20, and 24th and are likely to sell out.  An interview I did on the Charlotte Post’s The Creatives podcast can be found here:https://soundcloud.com/user-896542373/carl-dupont-opera-and-education.

I am probably most excited, however, about the American Spiritual Ensemble’s (ASE) visit to the UNC Charlotte Campus on February 12th. The performance will take place at 7:30, and this is a concert that you do not want to miss! ASE is the only professional ensemble in the world dedicated to the preservation of the Negro Spiritual. It has been one of my career’s highest honors to have sung with them for the past two years. I worked tirelessly to bring them to Charlotte precisely because this concert will be a unique and life changing event. Please secure your tickets early as this concert is likely to sellout. https://unccboxoffice.universitytickets.com/w/event.aspx?id=1355&r=72d63e8cc9e745c9a869b8bc6f2292d9

Now is also a great time to come for a rehearsal if you are considering joining the choir. The choir rehearses most Wednesday nights at 7:00-8:30. Please contact me at Carl@puuc.org if have any questions or would like to be sent a schedule.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carl DuPont
