A Letter from the Music Director
This month marks the conclusion of a wonderful musical partnership and the beginning of a fantastic new one. Since beginning as music director in January of 2015 we have shared many memorable musical moments in worship, rehearsal, performance, staff meetings, and staff outings (Rev. Mary Frances has graciously indulged my IHOP habit to my uttermost delight). I will be forever grateful for the support and for all of the kindness that this community has showed me, my musical guests, and my family.
The Piedmont UU Choir has exciting anthems planned for June 2nd and June 9th to conclude what has been a wide range of diverse and challenging repertoire this season. Sandwiched in between is a concert I am very excited about sharing with the Piedmont Community on June 7th at 7:00 entitled Deep River. This concert will feature Spirituals, art songs by Black composers, and Gospel music. Together these genres symbolize some significant artistic outpourings of African Americans and I am incredibly proud of being able to share them at Piedmont UU Church. Later this summer, Dr. Gregory Thompson and I have been invited to present this same program at the Baltimore Festival, Sapienza Università di Roma, and the Salzburger Kammermusik Konzerte, but you will get to see and hear the premier!
During the concert a love offering will be taken up as a fundraiser for the Music Restricted Fund. This fund, outside of the annual operating budget, is at the disposal of the music director to augment the musical offerings however they see fit. We’ve benefitted by having wonderful guest musicians bring their unique talents to our services and through purchasing new sheet music. It is important to me that this fund be replenished to support the new music director joining Piedmont UU Church. Although my last Sunday with you on June 23rd might have a tinge of bittersweet emotions, the very next Sunday, June 30th, will be one of joy as Kaarin Record Leach begins her tenure as the next music director. I have been incredibly impressed with her talents and I am excited about the new directions that the Music Program will grow under her leadership.
