Friday, August 27 and Saturday, August 28
August will be an exciting month for PUUC. Reverend Robin Tanner will begun her ministry with us on August 1 and preach at the Sunday services on August 15, August 22, and August 29. On Friday, August 27, and Saturday, August 28, TJ District Executive Annette Marquis will join us for our first ever Start Up Weekend. The weekend will begin with a potluck and church meeting open to the entire congregation on Friday evening. Child care will be provided, and the board hopes that all of our members who are able will attend. We also plan to invite former members who may be interested in this special event. OVERVIEW A start-up workshop with a new minister is designed to help develop a clear understanding of history, roles and expectations of one another in the ministerial relationship with the leadership of the congregation. We will review past relationships with ministers, as well as clarify role distinctions (what is the minister's responsibility, what belongs to the lay leadership and the rest of the staff, etc.) and articulate mutual expectations of one another, both contractually and culturally. Participants find that it helps enormously in terms of spreading out a sense of ownership of the shared ministry of the congregation, as well as getting the new relationship off to an open, honest and healthy start. FRIDAY Congregational Sharing: History and Hopes Friday’s schedule is 7:00 PM-9:00 PM. The evening’s event is open to the minister and all congregational members and friends and is an opportunity to talk together about where the congregation has been and where it is heading. The potluck will begin around 6:00 and the evening will conclude by 9:00 pm. The 7:00-9:00 PM time is typically used to do a Timeline Exercise that provides an opportunity for the congregation to reflect on its history, traditions, expectations and patterns of behavior. SATURDAY Leadership Expectations & Covenant Development Saturday’s schedule is 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Light breakfast will be available from 8:30-9:00. This event is open to the board, committee chairs, Committee on Ministry, and minister (and staff at the minister’s discretion). The purpose of the session is to establish a clear understanding of the roles of the ministers and the leadership. We will talk about our expectations of each other and the particular norms of our congregation. From 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Annette will meet with Robin and members of the Committee on Ministry. Those members are Judy Dancing, Nancy Delux, Margaret Edwards, Anne Laukaitis and Lucy Neel.
